The Gastrointestinal System Flashcards
What are the three main functions of the gastrointestinal system?
Ingestion, digestion and absorption.
What does the gastrointestinal system consist of?
The mouth, pharynx, oesphagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus.
Where does 90% of the nutrient absorption take place?
It takes place in the small intestine and the 10% remaining occurs in the stomach and large intestine.
What does deglutition mean?
To swallow.
To mastication means
To chew and break down burgers.
Tell me about the process of digestion
Food enters the mouth and MASTICATION occurs (mechanical digestion)
Salivary juices begin chemical digestion
Food becomes a bolus and deglutition (swallowing) occurs moving through the pharynx and oesophagus.
The bolus enters the stomach aided by peristaltic action and gravity.
The bolus is churned by the process of peristalsis and mixed with gastric juice to become chyme and digestion aided by hcl & enzymes found in the gastric juice
Peristalsis moved the chyme to the small intestine where absorption of vitamins, minerals and nutrients occurs through the villi.
