The Circulatory System Flashcards
Name the upper and lower chambers of the heart
Each upper chamber is called ATRIUM (plural-artia)
Each lower chamber is called VENTRICLE
How many chambers are in the heart?
Four chambers
Where is the heart located
Left side of the body in the thoracic cavity between two lungs
What is the hearts primary function
Pumps blood through the blood vessels of the body and provides every cell in the body with vital nutrients and oxygen
How does blood flow through the lungs
Pulmonary circulation
Blood is transported throughout the entire body by a network of blood vessels, what are they?
Arteries, veins and capillaries
Arteries carry blood away from the heart to the cells under _________ pressure.
High
Veins carry blood back to the heart under _______ pressure
Low
There is 4-6 litres of blood in the adult body, name three main functions blood has in the body
- Transport substances around the body ex: carry O2 from the lungs to the cells and carry CO2 another waste materials from the cells to lungs
- Participate in the regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-base balance and body temperature
- Protect the body from infection
What is blood made of?
Blood is compromised of two parts;the liquid portion (plasma) and the formed elements (blood cells)
What is plasma? What does plasma do?
Pale yellow fluid which contains protein, gases and salts.
- regulate fluid volume
- protect itself from pathogens
- prevent excessive blood loss
List a few signs and symptoms someone would show if they had circulatory disorders
Blood pressure changes Irregular pulse rates Light headed Fatigue Skin changes such as coldness Ulcerations Easy bruising
