The Nervous System Flashcards
Identify the two main divisions of the nervous system
Central nervous system (CNS) which includes the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) which consists of the nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.
Name the three main functions of the nervous system
Sensory- sensory nerves gather info from inside the body and outside environment. The nerves then carry info to the CNS (central nervous system)
Integrative function- sensory info brought to the CNS is processed and interpreted
Motor function- motor nerves convey info from the CNS to the muscles and the glands of the body.
Where is the cerebellum and what are it’s functions?
It’s the striped brain part and it lies at the back of the skull. It’s functions are to control voluntary muscles, balance and muscle tone.
What is the cerebral cortex?
It’s the outer layer of the cerebrum.
Which lobes are responsible for vision, hearing, smell and taste?
The occipital lobe is responsible for vision and the temporal lobe is responsible for hearing, smell and taste
What is the parietal love responsible for?
Sensory stimuli.
What does the frontal lobe control?
Personality, behaviour, emotion and motor function.
What does the frontal lobe control?
It controls personality, behaviour, emotion and motor function.
Along the brainstem is the medulla oblongata, what does it control?
MO controls vital functions such as heart rate and breathing.
The midbrain and the pons relay both control both _______ and ________information.
Sensory and motor.
What is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Within the subarachnoid space CSF circulated with forms a little baby cushion around the brain and spinal cord to help prevent injury.
The autonomic nervous system controls the automatic functions of the body which are ____,_______ and ______.
Smooth muscle (organs), heart and glands.
The somatic nervous system allows us to consciously, or voluntarily, controls our skeletal muscles. How many cranial nerves and spinal nerves are there?
12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves
Nerves are made up of special cells called…..
NEURONS!!!!
What do sensory NEURONS do?
Carry messages from a receptor to the brain, the brain then interprets the message.
THEN
Motor NEURONS send message to an affector in either a muscle or glands.
