the respiratory system Flashcards
what is the respiratory system
The respiratory system is a system of organs that work together for 2 main functions:
1. To get oxygen from the air into the blood
2. To get carbon dioxide from the blood out into the air
what are the two main functions of the respiratory system
- To get oxygen from the air into the blood
- To get carbon dioxide from the blood out into the air
why is oxygen required in cellular respiration
Oxygen is required by the body for cellular respiration the process in which it reacts with glucose to release energy to keep your cells alive
what do all cells need?
All cells need a constant supply of oxygen
what is the product of cellular respiration
Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Why do we get rid of carbon dioxide?
The body needs to get ride of carbon dioxide as it becomes toxic is allowed to build
what is the ‘formula’ for cellular respiration
oxygen + glucose ——–> water + carbon dioxide
oxygen
it is absorbed into the blood, from the air, by the respiratory system
glucose
it is absorbed into the blood from food in the digestive system
what does the arrow mean in the formular for cellular respiration
energy released for living
water
released to the environment mostly by the excretory system (wee/sweat)
carbon dioxide
removed from the blood and released into the air by the respiratory system
the mouth
the nose
the pharynx
the trachea
the bronchi
they carry air in and out of the lungs, and are the big tubes
the bronchioles
the little branches coming off the big tubes, and they make sure that air in the lungs is delivered to the alveoli.
the alveoli
Alveoli are tiny air sacs in your lungs that help you breathe by exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide with your blood. this is where gas exchange occurs and are at the ends of the bro
the capillaries
Capillaries are delicate blood vessels that exist throughout your body. They transport blood, nutrients and oxygen to cells in your organs and body systems. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in your vascular system.
the diaphragm
Thin skeletal muscle
The diaphragm is a thin skeletal muscle that sits at the base of the chest and separates the abdomen from the chest. It contracts and flattens when you inhale.
