Cells Flashcards
common characteristics for living things
- Reproduce
- Movement
- Use/take in energy
- Growth
- Eat/take in nutrients
- Excrete waste
- Exchange gases
- Made of cells
- They can die
So, if all living things are made of cells, what are cells?
- They are mostly microscopic and you will need a microscope to see them
- Some are large enough to see.
- The largest cells are eggs!
- Cells are the smallest functioning unit of living things
*If you split a cell, it is no longer living and is now chemicals
Basic cell structure
Cells also have structures floating in the cytoplasm called organelles. We will learn more about them so. Some cells also have a cell wall surrounding the cell membrane.
what is a unicellular organism
- An organism (living thing) that consist of only one cell
- Examples
- Bacteria
- Some fungi
multicellular organisms
- An organism made up of many cells, often billions
- Examples
- Trees
- Humans

basic cell structure
cell membrane - like a barrier around the cytoplasm
cytoplasm - a fluid, trapped by the cell membrane.
the nucleus - the centre of the cell, it controls everything the cell does and floats around in the cytoplasm.
organelles- the organelles float in the cytoplasm, around the nucleus
