define the term diffusion
the process whereby simple substances move across a membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration
examples:
1. oxygen diffusing from the alveoli into the bloodstream
2. carbon dioxide diffusing from the blood into the alveoli
3. the products of digestion (glucose, amino acid, and fatty acid) diffusing out of the small intestine into the blood

- moist
