The Renal System (Test 3) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the basic function of the renal system?
A
- To filter the fluid in our body
2
Q
What is the function of kidneys?
A
- To help filter blood to separate out metabolite byproducts and exogenous macromolecules
3
Q
How do the kidneys filter urine?
A
- Blood pressure
- Active and passive transport
4
Q
How do kidneys filter blood?
A
- Blood presses against capillaries that are highly porous (glomerulus) and filters solutes from solution (plasma)
- Plasma then leaks from the glomerulus into bowman’s capsule
5
Q
What is the functional unit of the kidney>
A
- The nephron
6
Q
What does the nephron do?
A
- Concentrates urine by using the osmotic gradient
7
Q
What is the resulting force that moves plasma deeper into the nephron?
A
- Net filtration pressure
8
Q
What factors affect Glomerulus filtration rate (GFR)?
A
- Constriction or dilation of afferent or efferent arterioles
