after the July days of 1789, there had been an increasing number of aristocratic emigres who fled France to neighbouring kingdoms of Britain, Prussia, Austria. Revolutionary France was surrounded by hostile countries who wished it ill

this group of three European monarchies looked with outrage at the revolution, each considered whether, how, why they should intervene. Some wanted to support king Louis and prevent the spread of revolution. Others wanted to take advantage of the chaos in France to capture the territory from the French

what happened to the rights of the people
in this time of national emergency and war the comma moderate, revolutionaries who wanted a small revolution with limited changes to France found their hold on power weekend as those who promised to do whatever it takes to keep France safe, the radicals, took power.
what did the radical revolutionaries do
In this very dangerous time for France it was perhaps not surprising that radical revolutionaries might decide to suspend many of the freedoms they promised in 1789.

why was 1792 dangerous
1792 is very dangerous for many reasons; the emigres seemed to be recruiting support for a counter revolution, the convention was fighting a war against Austria and Prussia, it seemed that foreign nations, aristocrats and the clergy wanted to restore the ancient regime and put king Louie back on the throne as absolute monarch, in some very religious areas civil wars broke out between revolutionaries and those who wanted the government to restore the church to its traditional place in society, riots and lawlessness and disorder took place
what did the duke do
on July 25th, 1792, a Prussian Duke who was a friend of Marie Antoinette, threatened that if the royal family were harmed, he would burn Paris to the ground
what did the people of paris think about the prussian duke
the people of Paris were outraged, and the moderate voices were less vocal. The war must be won the revolution must succeed. War and fear led to the rise of the most violent and radical revolutionaries
what was the response to the duke
in response, in August 1792 the radical convention kidnapped the royal family, arrested them, and sent them to the temple for crimes against the French people. Some historians believe this is the beginning of the reign of terror. Marquis de Lafayette was held in the temple as well
who were the sans-culottes
huge armies of working class men (sans-culottes) were raised come up freedoms were suspended; power became put into the hands of small committees of radical revolutionaries AKA the Jacobins. They had power until 1794
who were the jacobins
the Jacobins were bourgeoisie led by Robespierre and the committee of public safety until he was executed. His death marks the end of the reign of terror and the return of moderate leadership to France. Yet the war continued. The revolution now relied on its successful armies to protect it
