Weak Leadership of Louis XVI:
King Louis XVI was seen as indecisive and unable to solve France’s financial crisis. His failure to address the needs of the people contributed to the instability.
Estates-General of 1789:
In 1789, due to France’s financial problems, Louis XVI called the Estates-General (a meeting of representatives from all three estates). The Third Estate, feeling underrepresented, eventually proclaimed itself the National Assembly, signalling the start of the revolution.
The Tennis Court Oath:
After being locked out of a meeting of the Estates-General, the Third Estate gathered on a tennis court and swore not to disband until a new constitution was created. This was a bold act that showed their resolve to challenge the king’s authority.
The Storming of the Bastille (July 14, 1789):
The storming of the Bastille, a prison symbolizing royal tyranny, was a direct action by the people of Paris. It marked the beginning of the revolution and is now celebrated as France’s national day.
