Q

YMCA hotels and the Raines Law

A

YMCA: meant for inner city men to get back up on their feet, but inadvertently provided a place for gay men to meet.

Raines Law: said saloons that didn’t serve food must be closed on Sundays. However, saloons attached to hotels were exempt. So these saloons rented out at least 10 rooms to count as a ‘hotel’ but charged hourly, so it was a place for couples to hook up without scrutiny.
