Define Socialisation
The social learning process that occurs from birth to death. where individuals need and absorb cultural values and norms from the society they live in
Define Society
A community of people sharing common territory and culture. they also tend to interact with each other daily
Define Identity
The qualities, beliefs, personality, looks and/or expressions that make up how you see yourself and how others see you / judge you
Define Beliefs
Ideas that people in a society see to be true
Define Artefacts
Material objects / cultural products that have a symbolic meaning to them for certain members in a society
Define High Culture
Cultural products that are seen to be very rare, unique and the product of exceptional talent
Define Mass / Popular Culture
Cultural artefacts that are mass produced for mass consumption (pop music, blockbuster movies etc )
Define Folk Culture
Type of culture based on experiences, customs, traditions and beliefs / rural communities ( peasantry / tribes) that are passed down by the word-of-mouth
Define Values
General guidelines that tell members of the society how to behave, they generally shape norms of behaviour (many societies value marriage)
Define Value System
Collection of values, norms and customs that is agreed upon a social group / society
Define Relativity of Culture
Idea that what constitutes culture differs by periods of time, societies and between social groups that live in the same society
Define Norms
Rules that govern which behaviours are normal in any given social institution
Define Secular
Not being subjected to religious routines / rules
Define Role
those occupying a particular status are expected to behave a certain way
Define Gender Role Socialisation
Process of learning behaviour that is culturally expected form males and females
