Define Social Controls
These are rules made to reinforce the ‘ideal’ behaviour and to ensure conformity
(if not abide it can result in public punishment)
Define Formal Social Control
Sanctions enforced by official agencies (government) when written formal rules are broken
Define Negative Sanctions
Punishments aimed at scaring off deviance
Define Control by Consent
When a social group is being persuaded to obey the rules as they will benefit from them in the long run
Define Ideological
Based on untrue information a powerful group aim to justify and legitimate a type of inequality
Define Informal Social Controls
When friends, relatives and peers have a negative reaction to deviance and this encourages conformity to the informal rules they employ
Define Conformity
Obeying / complying with social norms, rules and laws
Define Positive Sanctions
Rewards that encourage conformity
Define Subculture
A distinct group existing in the wider society, that has a separate identity, the way they dress/ behave stands out from the mainstream culture
Define Spectacular Youth Subculture
These are highly visible groups of young people committed to a certain ‘shocking’ way to dress, act etc. The media and older generations often interpret them to be threatening the moral order / the stability of the society
Define Symbolisation
Some news reporting social groups use this process to identify key features of certain groups (young people usually). Helps others to avoid them / toe be easily identified and targeted by the police
Define Demonisation
A social practice where some groups are as though they have ‘social problems’ / that they are a threat to those belonging in the mainstream law-abiding society
Define Fat-Shaming
The action of humiliating someone of being fat / overweight by making mocking / critical comments about their size
