The Problem Of Evil And Suffering And God’s Nature Flashcards
2 views on evil
- must be committed by someone or involve bad intention
- events which produce negative consequences
2 types of evil
Natural and moral
Natural evil
Involves events, which are not caused by a human’s intentions, causing pain and suffering.
E.g. tsunami, earthquake, disease
Moral evil
Morally bad intention or action, often resulting in pain and suffering
E.g. murder, theft, exploitation due to hate, or greed or anger
Inconsistent triad reasoning
- More loving for god to give us free Will, meaning moral evil is possible - natural evil may be a punishment for original sin
- evil may be a test - book of job = suffering tests character and faith
Inconsistent triad
If god is benevolent and omnipotent and righteous, it doesn’t make sense for him to allow evil and suffering.
If he is omnipotent he could stop evil and suffering.
If he is benevolent he wouldn’t want people to suffer
If he is righteous he wouldn’t let good people suffer.
The fall and free will
- when Adam and Eve disobeyed God they fell from God’s grace.
- disobeying god means we have free will.
- free will means that they can choose to be evil
Original sin
A kind of imperfection and separation from God’s will, is inherited at birth. However many Christian’s still believe that human ps have the capability to be good - to follow God’s will.
Quote
When you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like god, knowing good and evil
