Celebrations Flashcards
Good Friday
Christians celebrate Jesus being crucified to atone for Christians’ sins.
Easter Sunday
they celebrate him being resurrected from the dead, overcoming death.
Part of Easter that catholics emphasise
the events of Good Friday: Jesus paying the price of sin.
Part of Easter Sunday that Protestants emphasise
Easter Sunday: Jesus overcoming death.
Lent
- period before Easter
Christians traditionally repent of their sins. Holy Week, the week before Easter, focuses Christians even more on Jesus’ Passion and resurrection. These celebrations are important because Christians believe that through his death and resurrection, Jesus brought them salvation and reconciliation with God.
Quote - Easter
But the angel said to the women, “Do not be
afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who
was crucified. He is not here; for he has been
raised, as he said…” Suddenly Jesus met them and
said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took
hold of his feet, and worshipped him.
Christmas
Celebration of Jesus’ birth. Advent helps Christians prepare for Christmas. It is important because it helps Christians to focus on their belief that God sent his Son, Jesus, who many believe to be God incarnate, to save them and reconcile them with God.
Importance of Christmas
Jesus’ birth was when Jesus came into the world to live with and teach humans, and without his birth he would not have been able to die and rise to save humanity. Celebrating Christmas can help Christians deepen their personal relationship with God.
Why do puritans disapprove of Christmas?
They tried to ban it in the 1600s because they saw no religious reason for it and felt it was secularised.
Christmas quote
to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
