what is a learning organisation?
all businesses should try and become learning organisations
meaning they are able to:
- continually change and adapt to new situations quickly
- constantly think about how they can work to do things better, as both individuals and as a team
- use thinking and behaviours that make them more open to new ideas and possibilities
what are the 5 principles of learning organisation?
- systems thinking (the main one)
- mental models
- building shared vision
- team learning
- personal mastery
explain systems thinking.
businesses use systems thinking when they:
- see the business as a whole and understand all the connections and relationships between parts of the business
- understand that changes in the world don’t happen randomly, instead, they understand the change happen because of patters that can be understood
- see the big picture and think about the long-term whenever they think about the impact of change
explain personal mastery.
individual staff need to:
- analyse their strengths and weaknesses
- understand they must always be learning and increasing their own expectations of what they can do if the business is going to be able to change successfully
- build their skills and knowledge in required areas
explain mental models
this means:
- identifying their assumptions
- challenging these assumptions to test whether they are actually true
- being open, honest and trusting so people can feel safe to ask hard questions and introduce new ideas
explain building a shared vision
this means:
- all employees understand what the business is trying to achieve
- employees know where to direct their energy and where to develop their personal mastery
- empoyees feel involved in the change and are committed to it
explain team learning
this means:
- individuals are able to align their personal mastery goals so they work together to achieve the shared vision
- individuals learn from each other and as a whole group
