A
  • if they fear the unknown
  • fear for their job secuirty
  • fail to see a reason for change

this is because change can be disorienting and dispute and disputes, to overcome this apropriate level of communication and support need to be given

how can time be a restraining force?

A

change takes time and can cause resistance.

  • deadlines, manager announcement, delays with contractors all put a strain on a business
  • if a competitor comes in, then ideally the business should respond quickly but changing a business’ tasks, procedures or products/service can take long

how can organisational inertia be a restraining force?

A

organisation inertia: tendency for a business to maintain an established way of operating (remain unchanged)
- if a business remains unchanging and enjoys the status quo of their present position
- business’ that are traditional and is conservative
- e.g. of companies of struggled with organisational inertia: kodak, blockbuster

how can legislation be a restraining force?

A

certain laws may prevent the business from operating in the way it wants
- may struggle to compete with cheaper imports and reduce costs so business may reduce wages but in the National Employment Standards it is illegal to pay someone below the national minimum wage
- failure to comply with legislation can lead to fines, suspensions, prison

how can financial considerations be a restraining force?

A

change incur financial costs, there needs to be sufficient funds
no funds mean that change is unlikely to occur and lack of funds means scaling down plans or even aborting them. t
