The Pigs Flashcards
“Major’s speech had given to the more intelligent animals a completely new outlook on life”
Were much more enthusiastic about the revolution- minor hint at how they recognised they would be able to manipulate it to benefit from it
“with their superior knowledge, it was natural that they should assume the leadership”
All animals are meant to be equal in animalism but the pigs assume leadership as the “natural” way things are meant to happen- in life, everyone cannot really be equal
Intellectuals also have a duty to not abuse the leadership they get because of their greater knowledge/ skills
only ones who put forward resolution during the Meeting
Intellectuals were already having some power over others
Contrasting descriptions of Snowball and Napoleon
FORESHADOWS the conflict that would arise between them.
“Major’s speech had…
….given to the more intelligent animals, a completely new outlook on life”
“with their superior knowledge….
…it was natural that they should assume the leadership”
Snowball wanted to spread Animalism while Napoleon wanted to focus on improving the Farm’s defence.
Snowball could be showing a greater value for socialist principles -though a bit unrealistic- while Napoleon is ,arguably, only interested in protecting what he controls and holding unto His newfound power with Jones’ gone.
“unnecessary”
Napoleon’s description of the sunday meeting; Orwell SHOWS how to totalitarian leaders, public opinion is of no value and they rule as dictators, denouncing all democracy.
