The pigs
“an unalterable law by which all the animals must live”
IRONY as the pigs contradict the principles they held earlier in the novel as they are perverted and corrupted by power. HIGHLIGHTS their hypocritism
“Whatever goes upon…”
“two legs is an enemy”
“Whatever goes upon four…”
“legs or has wings is a friend”
“No animal shall wear…”
“clothes”
“No animal shall sleep…”
“in a bed”
“No animal shall drink…”
“alcohol”
“No animal shall kill…”
“any other animal”
“All animals are…”
“equal”- Last and final commandment
Snowball declared that the seven commandments could be REDUCED to the maxim, “Four legs good, two legs bad” which contained the “essential principle of Animalism”
SYMBOLISES the degradation of original socialist ideas in Russia- Animalism/communism began to have a greater focus on loyalty to communist Russia and it’s leaders and therefore, the people were brainwashed to not realise that they were under totalitarian rule again even though not explicitly under royalty.
Animalism was slowly being warped and its original ideals sidelined.
“No animal shall sleep in a bed…
…with sheets”(Socialism altered to create communism)
The pigs change the commandments to allow them move into the farmhouse and sleep in the beds
Abuse of power required the pigs to change the laws, beliefs and facts of the farm- They needed to warp the socialist system into a communist one to suit their power-hungry agenda
