The Peritoneum Flashcards
What is the peritoneal cavity?
A potential space between the visercal and the parietal peritoneum, which contains a small amount of fluid
What ar the two layers of the periotnuem?
The visercal peritoneum which invaginates the majority of the abdominal organs and is derived from the splanchnic mesoderm, and the parietal peritoneum which covers the intestinal surface of the ambdominopelvic wall and is derived form the somatic mesoderm
What is a mesentary?
A double layer of visceral periotneum, connects an intraperiotneal organ to the abdominal wall and provides a pathway for the nerves and the blood vessels
What is a omentum?
A double layer or peritoneum that textends from the stomach and the proximal part of the duodenum t the abdominal organs
What are some of the key features of the greater omentum?
Consists of 4 layers of peritoneum, and descends from the greater curvature of the stomach and the proximal part of the duodemumand attaches to the anterior surface of the traverse colon and has a role in immunity
What are some of the key features of the lesser omentum?
Attaches from the lesser curvature of the sotmach, and the proximal part of the duodenum to the liver
What are the pertioneal ligaments?
A pertioneal ligment is a double fold of periotneum, that connects viscera to the abdominal wall, such as the ligament that connects the liver to the stomach
What are pertioneal adhesions?
Damage to the peritoneum resulting in inflammation that results in fibrosis and scar tissues that results in abnormal attachments between the visercal peritoneums of the adjacent organs or between visceral and parietal peritoneum and these can result in pain and complications such as Volvos
What are the two subdivisions of the pertioneal cavity?
The greater and the lesser sacs
What are some of the features of the greater sac?
It is the largest portion of the peritoneal cavity and is divided by the medsentary of the traverse colon into the supra colic and the infarcolic compartments
What are some of the features of the supracolic compartment?
Lies above the traverse mesocolom and contains the stomach the lover and the spleen
What are some of the features of the infracolic compartment?
Lies below the traverse mesolcon and contains the small intestine, the ascending and the descending colon, and is divided into the right and left infarcolic spaces by the mesentery of the small intestine
What are some of the features of the lesser sac?
Lies posterior to the stomach and the lesser omentum, allows stomach to move freely against the surfaces anterior and posterior to it, and comnnected to the greater sac through an opening the omental bursa called the epigloic formamen
In which sex is the pertioneal caivty completly closed?
Males
What is the rectouterine pouch ( pouch of douglas)
Is a double folded extensive of peritoneum between the rectum and the posterior wall of the uterus.
