Imaging Of The Gi Tract Flashcards
What are some of the imaging modialities that you can use on the GI tract?
Plain X-ray (chest and abdo) ultrasound, Mri, contrast studies, and anigography
What are some of the reasons that you would request an abdominal X-Ray?
Acut abdominal pain, small or large bowel movements, acut exaberations of TB, and renal colic
How can the bowel gas pattern indicate the transit time?
Slow includes the colon with faceses with gas, medium is in the stomach where there is fluid ans gas, and fast in the small intestines where there is just fluid
What are some of the features of the small bowel on an abdominal X_Ray?
It is central position, and if you don’t see it means that there is a fast transit time, and there are thin volvue concintae that cross the entire wall
What are some of the features of a large bowel?
It is at a periphral postion, and is surrounded by haustra with both faceses and gas present
What are some of the conditions that can cause abnromal bowel gas patterns?
Large bowel obstruction, small bowel obstruction, toxic megcolon and a volvu s
What are some of the features of a small bowel obstruction?
Present with vomiitiing (early) mild distesion, absolute constipation and colicky pain, and has casues indcluding adhesions, inflmatio, tumours, and hernais, that include inguinal and femoral
What are some of the features of a large bowel obstruction?
Presentation, (vimiting, lots) distension, pain, and absolute constribation, and causes that include volvus, pseudobstruction, hernia, diverticular stricture and colorectal carcinoma, and is a concern with a competent ilwocaeceal valve as this could result in perforation
What are some of the features of a volvus>
Is twisting around a mesentary has enclosed bowel loops and a sigmoid volvus
What is a toxic megacolon?
An acute deretoriation of UC or collitis, characterie by colonic dilatory, odema and psuedopolyps
What is a lead pipe colon?
It is a featureless part of the coon that has experienced loss of hastura, and often results from UC and chronic inflmation n
What is thumb priinting in the colon?
It is odemantous thickened hastura, and there is active inflammation of the cells, and can see the thickened proccesses within the hastura
What is the main choice of imaging to diagnose a perfomation in the bowle?
An erect CXR is the imaging of chioice
What is a sigmoid volvus?
Dilation of the proximal bowel that becomes obstructed, with a charcteristic coffee bean sign, and and cut off its own blood supply and undergo necrosis
What are some of the different contrast studies that you can perform on this paitent?
A barium swalloe (used to check for aspiration) a barium meal, a small bowel enema and a follow through
