The Periodic Table - Intro to Back to Basics (1.3) Flashcards
Where are the metals found in the periodic table?
On the left
Where are the non-metals found in the periodic table?
On the right
Where are the metalloids found?
In the middle
What are the properties of metalloids?
Metalloids have the properties of both metals & non-metals
Are there any trends in properties of elements in a period?
Elements in a period have gradually different properties
What do elements in a group have in common? How does this affect their properties?
- They all have the same number of outer electrons
- This means they have similar chemical properties
What is another name for group 1 elements?
Alkali metals
What is another name for group 2 elements?
Alkali earth metals
What is another name for group 7 elements?
Halogens
What is another name for group 8 elements?
Noble gases
Describe the properties of G1 & G2 metals
- They are all soft silvery metals
- They are highly reactive
- They react with water to form an alkaline solution & hydrogen
What solutions do metal hydroxides dissolved in water give?
Alkaline solution
What is the trend in reactivity with water in G1?
They get more reactive
Describe the properties of transition metals
- They are denser & less reactive than G1 & G2 metals
- They often form coloured compounds
- They can be used as catalysts
Describe the properties of halogens
- They form diatomic molecules
- Their colours get darker down the group
- Their boiling points increase down the group
