Organic Reactions - Organic Reactions & Mechanisms (8.1) Flashcards
1
Q
What is complete combustion?
A
Complete combustion is when an alkane burns in excess O2 giving just CO2 + H2O as products
2
Q
What is incomplete combustion?
A
Incomplete combustion occurs when the alkane is burned with a limited O2 supply and produces CO + H2O
3
Q
How do alcohols combust?
A
In the same way as any other organic molecule (produce CO2 & H2O)
4
Q
Give 3 reasons why bioethanol is a good fuel
A
- It can be obtained from a renewable resource
- It does not contain sulphur which produces polluting gases (SO2, SO3)
- Alcohols have high enthalpies of combustion so release more energy per gram than conventional fuels
5
Q
What is cracking?
A
A long chain alkane is heated in the presence of a catalyst to give a shorter alkane & alkene
