The periodic table Flashcards
Describe group 1’s reactivity.
They are very reactive.
Their reactivity increases as you go down the group.
What is produced when group 1 metals react with water?
A metal hydroxide and hydrogen are produced.
Describe group 1’s melting and boiling points.
They have lower melting points than most metals. Group 1’s melting and boiling points decrease from the top to the bottom of the group.
Describe group 7’s reactivity.
The reactions get less vigorous as you go down the group. They react vigorously (especially with iron).
Describe group 7’s melting and boiling points.
They have low melting points which increase from top to bottom.
Group 7 elements are also called what?
The halogens.
Group 1 elements are also called what?
The alkali metals.
Group 0 elements are also called what?
The noble gases.
Describe group 7’s melting and boiling points.
They have low melting and boiling points which increase from top to bottom.
Group 0 elements are also called what?
The noble gases.
Describe group 0’s melting and boiling points.
They have low melting and boiling points which increase from bottom to top.
Complete the statement:
Group 0 gases glow brightly when…
…high voltage electricity passes through them.
Describe group 0’s reactivity.
They are unreactive. From top to bottom the elements get slightly more reactive.
What is a metal?
Elements on the left side of the stepped line on the periodic table. They are good conductors of energy and electricity.
What is a metalloid?
Elements near the stepped line that share properties of metals and non-metals.
