Seperation techniques Flashcards
What is a mixture made up off?
Substances not chemically joined together.
What is a solute?
The solid or gas that dissolves in a liquid.
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which a solid or gas dissolves.
What is a solution?
A mixture of a liquid with a solid or gas. All parts to a solution are the same.
What is solubility?
The mass that dissolves in 100g of water.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution in which no more solute can dissolve.
What does insoluble mean?
A substance that can’t dissolve in a certain solvent is insoluble to that solvent.
What is filtration?
A way of separating pieces of solid that are mixed with a liquid or a solution.
What is a filtrate?
The liquid or solution that collects in the container after the mixture has passed through the filter paper.
What are residues?
Solids that collect in the filter paper in filtration.
What is distillation?
A technique that uses evaporation and condensation to obtain a solvent from a solution.
What is chromatography?
A technique to separate mixtures of liquids that are soluble in the same solvent.
What is a chromatogram?
An image obtained from chromatography.
What does pure mean?
A substance is pure when it has no other mixtures mixed with it.
What does impure mean?
A substance is impure if it has different substances mixed with it.
