Energy Flashcards
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred.
What is energy measured in?
Joules (J)
What is temperature measured in and what with?
It is measured in degrees Celsius/Centigrade (°C) using a thermometer.
What does temperature depend on?
The amount of energy in the thermal store.
What happens when a hot and cold object come into contact?
Thermal energy is transferred from the hot object to the cold one. The temperature will decrease until they are in thermal equilibrium.
How is energy transferred in solids?
Energy transferred in solids by the process called conduction.
How is energy transferred in liquids and gases.
Energy transferred in liquids and gases by convection.
Describe radiation.
Energy can be transferred by radiation through any medium, even where there are no particles. All objects emit radiation.
Complete the statement:
If the energy transferred to an object is less than the energy transferred from it,
…the object will cool down.
What three energy resources are fossil fuels?
Coal
Oil
Natural Gas
Are fossil fuels renewable or non-renewable?
Non-renewable.
Give some examples of renewable energy resources.
- Wind
- Wave
- Solar
Power (W) =
Energy (J)
__________
Time (secs)
Electrical power (W) =
Potential difference (V) x Current (A)
Work (J) =
Force (N) x Distance (m)
