Acids and metals Flashcards
What’s the reactivity series?
A list of metals in order of how reactive they are.
What happens in a displacement reaction?
In a displacement reaction, a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal.
What’s a composite?
A mixture of materials with properties that are a mixture of the materials in it.
What’s a thermite reaction?
The reaction of aluminium with iron oxide to make aluminium oxide and iron.
What’s the name of a carbon displacement reaction?
Smelting
What’s a ceramic?
A compound such as a metal silicate or oxide that is hard, strong and has a high melting point.
What’s a polymer?
A polymer is a substance with very long molecules. Each polymer molecule has identical groups of atoms repeated many times.
What are the two types of polymers and what is the difference?
Natural polymers (made from animals or plants) and Synthetic polymers (not naturally occurring).
What’s an ore?
A rock you can extract a metal from.
What’s oxidation?
A chemical reaction where a substance gains oxygen.
What’s reduction?
A chemical reaction where a substance loses oxygen.
What’s carbon-fibre?
A material made of thin tubes of carbon.
Is a ceramic a compound or a mixture?
A compound
What is produced when a metal reacts with hydrochloric acid?
A metal chloride and hydrogen is produced.
Describe the molecules in low-density polyethene (LDPE) and the properties of LDPE.
The molecules in LDPE slide over each other, this makes it flexible. LDPE is also strong.
