Adaptions and inheritance Flashcards
What do animals compete for?
1) Food
2) Water
3) Space -for hunt and shelter
4) Mates
What do plants compete for?
1) Light
2) Water
3) Space
4) Minerals
What is competition?
Competing with other organisms to survive.
What are adaptions?
Characteristics that help an organism to survive in its environment.
How do animals cope with cold temperature?
- Hibernation
- Migration
- Grow thicker coats
What is variation?
Differences in characteristics within a species.
What is a species?
Organisms that have lots of characteristics in common, and can mate to make fertile offspring.
What is inherited variation?
Variation inherited from parents.
What is environmental variation?
Variation caused by surroundings and what happens to a person.
What is continuous variation?
Characteristics that can take any value within a range of values.
What is discontinuous variation?
Characteristics that can only be a certain value.
How should discontinuous variation be plotted?
On a bar chart.
How should continuous variation be plotted?
On a histogram.
What is DNA?
Chemical that contains all the information needed to make an organism.
What are chromosomes?
Long strand of DNA which contains many genes.
What are genes?
Section of DNA that contains the information for a characteristic.
How many chromosomes does a human have?
46
(23 from each parent)
(23 pairs)
What is evolution?
Development of species over time.
What is a fossil?
The remains of animals which have turned to stone.
What is natural selection?
Process by which the organisms with the characteristics that are most suited to the environment survive and reproduce, by passing on their genes.
What does extinct mean?
When no more individuals of a species are left anywhere in the world.
What does endangered mean?
Species of plants and animals that only have a small population in the world.
What is biodiversity?
The range of organisms living in an area.
What is interdependence?
The way in which living organisms depend on each other to survive, grow and reproduce.
