The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is the charge and valency of an alkali metal?
It has a valency of 1 and is charged 1+.
What are the properties of an alkali metal?
1) It is soft.
2) Low melting and boiling points, which decreases down the group.
3) Low density, which increases down the group.
4) Can conduct electricity.
5) Reactive to water and air.
What are halogens?
They are reactive non-metals. They are less reactive down the group. They exist as diatomic molecules and are coloured.
What is the colour and form of fluorine?
It is gas at R.T.P, and is pale yellow.
What is the colour and form of chlorine?
It is gas at R.T.P, and is yellow green.
What is the colour and form of bromine?
It is liquid at R.T.P and is red-brown.
What is the colour and form of iodine and astatine?
It is solid at R.T.P, and is black.
Why does halogens have mp/bp below 200 degrees?
Due to the weak intermolecular forces in-between the molecules. The mp/bp increases down the group.
What are the properties of halogens?
1) All halogens has 7 electrons.
2) Halogens with smaller atoms attract electrons easily.
3) Halogens reacts violently with metals to form halides.
What is the valency and charge of noble gases?
They have a valency and charge of 0.
What are the properties of noble gases?
1) They are not soluble in water.
2) They exist as colourless gases at R.T.P.
3) They are very unreactive as they are stable.
4) Cannot conduct electricity.
5) Low melting and boiling points, which increases down the group.
Why are noble gases unreactive?
They have complete octet/duplet electronic configurations. They do not share, lose or gain electrons.
What is argon used for?
It is used to fill up light bulbs. It provides an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation of the filament.
What is helium used for?
It is a light gas used in weather balloons.
What is neon used for?
It is used for advertising lights.
