Introduction to Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons?
An organic compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen.
Where are organic compounds found?
In food and fuels.
How is petroleum separated in an oil refinery?
In the furnace at the bottom, petroleum is heated into vapour. The vapour is pumped into a large fractionating column. Small hydrocarbon contains fewer carbon atoms and have low boiling point. They are collected at the top of the furnace. Large hydrocarbon contains more carbon atoms and have high boiling point. They are collected at the bottom of the furnace.
State the fractions in decreasing order.
Petroleum gas Petrol Naphtha Kerosene(Paraffine) Diesel Lubricating oil Bitumen
What are the uses of petroleum gas?

What is the use of kerosene?
It is used for aircraft engine.
What is the use of diesel?
It is used for fuel for diesel engines.
What is the use of lubricating oil?
It is used for lubricating machines.
What is the use of bitumen?
It is used to make road surfaces.
