The Periodic Table Flashcards
Who was Mendeleev?
He had arranged the elements in the periodic table according to its increasing relative atomic mass. When doing this, he had noted that the chemical properties of the elements and their compound showed a periodic trend.
He had left gaps in his table for yet to be discovered elements.
As Mendeleev had left gaps, he was able to predict the properties of the unknown element by looking at the physical and chemical properties of the elements next to it.
The Modern Periodic Table
The elements are arranged according to their relative atomic number- not their mass.
Across a periodic table, the rows are called periods and elements are arranged based on their increasing atomic number.
Vertical columns are called groups and the elements have similar properties.
Metals
Found on the left hand side of the period table.
Non-Metals
Found on the right hand side.
