Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What is an Ionic Compound?
An ionic compound occurs when an negative ion joins with a positive ion.
Ionic Lattice: the Arranged Sequence
The ions in an ionic compound are not randomly arranged. Instead, they have a regular, repeating arrangement called an Ionic Lattice, which formed due to the ions attracting each other and forming a regular pattern with an oppositely charged ions next to each other.
Ionic Bonds
In the ionic lattice, the ions are held together by ionic bonds, which are strong as they have electrostatic force between oppositely charged ions.
Properties of Ionic compounds
High melting and boiling points: lots of energy is needed to break the electrostatic forces, which means that ionic compounds are solid at room temperature.
Conductors: They can a only conduct electricity when in molten form or a solution as their charged ions are able to freely move. However as a sold, ions are not free to move and so are insulators as they cannot carry electricity
Polyatomic Ions
Charged particle consisting of two or more atoms joined together
For example;
Ammonium - NH4+
Hydroxide - OH-
Nitrate - NO3-
Carbonate - CO3, 2-
Sulphate - SO4, 2-
