The Perineum Flashcards
Triangles of the perineum
ANTERIOR UROGENITAL TRIANGLE
POSTERIOR ANAL TRIANGLE
Contents of anal triangle
Anal aperture – the opening of the anus.
External anal sphincter muscle – voluntary muscle responsible for opening and closing the anus.
Ischioanal fossae (x2) – spaces located laterally to the anus.
Innervation of the anal triangle
Alongside the perineum, the anal triangle is innervated by pudendal nerve supplying somatic fibres
Contents of the urogenital triangle - deep perineal pouch
potential space between pelvic floor and perineal membrane
- ext. urethral sphincter, vagina
- bulbourethral glands, deep transverse perineal muscles
What divides the deep and superficial perineal pouches?
The perineal membrane, perforated by the urethra (and vagina)
*provides attachment for external muscle genitalia§
Contents of the urogenital triangle - superifcial perineal pouch
potential space between perineal membrane and superficial perineal fascia
*erectile tissues = ischiocavernosus, bulbospongiosus
- superficial transverse perineal muscles
- greater vestibular glands / bartholin’s glands
bounded to perineal body
Significant muscle attachments in the perineum
perineal bodies
anococcygeal bodies
Male urethra
PROSTATIC
- at neck of bladder, internal sphincter
- widest most dilated
- ejaculatory duct entry
MEMBRANOUS
- narrowest
- external sphincter
SPONGY / BULBOUS
- receipt of bulbourethral gland
NAVICULAR FOSSA: dilatation at the glans of penis
vascular supply of the male urethra
inferior vesical artery
bulbourethral artery
internal pudendal artery.
Nerve supply of the urethra
prostatic plexus
LYMPH drainage of urethra
prostatic and membranous portions drain to the obturator and internal iliac nodes,
the penile urethra drains to the deep and superficial inguinal nodes.
Location of urethra in females
internal = neck of bladder
external = distal end, orifice at the vetibule (opening) - voluntary, deep perineal branch
Vascular supply of female urethra
- internal pudendal arteries
vaginal arteries
inf. vesical branches - pudendal nerve
Female external genitalia
- mons pubis
- labia maj. - hair skin folds
- labia min. - fuse with clitoris and extend posteriorly of the vestibule
- Vestibule - opening enclosed by labia min.
- vaginal introitus
- urethra - bartholin’s glands - lubricating mucus
- clitoris - beneath clirotal hood
- corpora cavernosa: erectile
Vascular supply of the vulva
- internal and external pudendal arteries
- pudendla veins + labial veins
- LN: superficial inguinal lymph nodes
- pudendal nerve
