The nucleus - 10 Flashcards
What is the basic structure of the nucleus
Store place of inherited genes surrounded by the double membrane nuclear envelope
What is the basic function of the nucleus
Controls cell function (turning genes on and off)
Stores most of cells DNA
What are nuclear pores
Pores on the surface of nuclear envelope that are important for regulation
What goes out of nuclear pores
Messenger RNA and DNA
Ribosomal subunits needed to build proteins
What goes in through nuclear pores
Control signals
Building materials
Energy (proteins)
Explain packaging of DNA
- DNA double helix coils as it interacts with histones (protein) to form octamer.
- Then wraps around less than 2x to become nucleosome.
- Which then interacts with histones to coil again.
- And then loops. In cell division they coil again to form chromosomes
What is the change in diameter of DNA
2nm - 300nm
What is the nucleo-cytoplasmic exchange
exchange of matter between the nucleus and cytoplasm
What is euchromatin
Less dense region made of DNA that is used by the cell
What is the region where DNA is not used called
Heterochromatin (dense region)
What is the relationship between euchromatin and heterochromatin
They have a dynamic relationship and amounts of each can change
