THE NEW RIGHT Flashcards
What are the new rights view on education?
1) marketisation - schools become more like businesses
2) similar views as functionalists but don’t believe that it is working as in their eyes the reason for it is because les run by the state
Chubb and moe 3 views on why state run education is failing in the united states
1)not created equal opportunity, failed needs of disadvantaged groups
2)falls to produce pupils with the skills needed by the economy
3)private schools deliver higher quality education because nuke state schools they are answerable to paying consumers- the parents
What idea did Chubb and moe put forward to put parents in control?
Each family would be given a voucher to pay for education at their school of choice, this would be schools main source of finance so schools would have to answer to parents
This didn’t happen but formula funding did
Alongside creating an education market, what did the new right believe the two key roles education should do?
1)state should impose framework for schools to compete, for example publishing reports and league tables gives parents information so they can make informed decisions about schools
2)state ensure schools transmit a shared culture by imposing the national curriculum ensures schools socialise pupils into a single cultural heritage
Criticisms of the new right (2)
1) BALL1994: competition benefits the middle class as they can use their cultural and economic capital to gain access to the more desirable schools
2) the cause of low educational standards isn’t because of state control but due to social inequality and inadequate funding of state schools
