What were FDR’s ideals for dealing with the Depression?
- Relief - help the old, sick, unemployed and homeless
- Recovery - government schemes to provide jobs
- Reform - make America a better place and ensure another Depression won’t happen.
What were FDR’s Alphabet Agencies? Name and describe the function of 3.
- Federal government agencies created as part of the New Deal to create jobs and provide services to help recovery from the G.D.
- Emergency Banking Act - ordered all banks to close for 4 days, only allowing those properly managed to reopen, which ended the banking crisis.
- AAA (Agriculture Adjustment Administration) - paid farmers the same income to produce less food, which raised prices of which. Helped farmers conserve soil to prevent another Dust Bowl
- CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) - helped 2.5 million unemployed men (18-25) by giving them 6 months of work on environmental projects.

Why did the Supreme Court oppose the New Deal?
- Declared 11/16 Alphabet Agencies unconstitutional, e.g. AAA b/c efforts to help farmers should come at state-level not federal.
- Said that parts of the New Deal contradicted the powers of the states given by the Constitution.
Why did Republicans oppose the New Deal?
- Thought the NRA and TVA were like the communist economic planning of the USSR
- Thought the Social Security Act would encourage laziness which directly opposes rugged individualism
Why did radicals oppose the New Deal?
Louisiana senator said FDR didn’t do enough for the poor - proposed an alternative called “Share Our Wealth” and promised to confiscate personal stuff worth over $3 mil to give each American family $4-5000
Why did the rich oppose the New Deal?
FDR’s social class hated the higher taxes for the rich which financed the New Deal - treated him as a “class-traitor” and was expelled from his class for letting down “his people”
