- Beleived Af-Am’s should arm themselves and force equal rights
- Clashed with police - killed 9 officers between 1967-69

- Series of race riots
- Caused by poor relations between police and Af-Am’s - distrusted police
- Links to Black Panthers

- Public:
- At least partly responsible for race riots of 1965-67 - Other civil rights leaders e.g Roy Wilkins
- Gave law enforcement authorities chance and excuse to “crack down” on all Af-Am activity
