The Nervous System ( area 1 / 2. 8 ) Flashcards
Function of nervous system?
- Most living organism have some form os NS.
- Receives info ( sensory input )
- Process information ( integration )
Spread through entire body
TWO types of nervous system?
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
What is Central Nervous System?
Includes brain and the spinal cord
What is Peripheral Nervous System?
All other nerves ( not brain or spinal cord ) which provides info to the central system
FEATURES of Central Nervous System?
- Process the info received and activate reaction.
- Both physical and metaphorically central.
Brain: mastercontrol centrem highly organised and specialised.
Spinal cord: protected by vertebrae.
Interconnect neurons - neural pathways used for communication.
FEATURES of Peripheral Nervous System?
4 FEATURES
OUTISDE
-Networked nerves outside
- Connects the central nervous system to organs, skins etc
- provides info to the CNS and message other areas of the body.
- Regulates involuntary body functions ( heatbeat, breathing. )
Damage to spinal cord?
No communication between body and brain.
What is Peripheral Nervous System made up of? TWO
Somatic Nervous system
Autonomic Nervous system
Features of somatic nervous system?
- Network of nerves that carry sensory info to and from the CNS.
- Body has sensory receptors to carry message along neural pathways. etc control muscle activity in response
What else is somatic ns known as?
Skeletal nervous system
It connects skeletal muscles with CNS.
What is somatic tend to be responsible for?
- Voluntary
- Conscious
- Skeletal movement
Features of Autonomic nervous system?
- A network of nerves like SNS, but works with involuntary unconscious movement.
- Functions of organs such as heartbeat and perspiration.
- Fairly independent on CNS
TWO DIVISION of Autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic nervous system
- Parasympathetic
Function of Sympathetic nervous system?
Arouses the body under stressful stimuli is detected.
Function of Parasympathetic ?
Calms and restores the body after.
