The nervous system Flashcards
The two parts of the nervous system.
- The central nervous system (CNS)
- The peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What does the CNS do?
The brain and the spinal cord
It processes information gathered to form the sense organs
What does the PNS do?
Sends impulses from sense organs to the CNS and passes impulses to effectors (muscles) to carry out responses
Name the 3 types of neurones (nerve cells)
- Sensory
- Motor
- Relay
What does the sensory neurone do?
Take messages from the sense organs to the CNS
What does the motor neurone do?
Take messages firm the CNS to the effectors (muscles)
What does the relay neurone do?
Pass messages from sensory to motor neurones within the CNS
Name the parts of a neurone
- Cell body
- Dendreon /Axon
- Myelin sheath
- Dendrites / Axon terminals
What de stje cell body conain?
The nucleus
What is the purpose of the Axon?
The electrical impulses travel through there
What does the myelin sheath do?
Insulate the axon and speeds up the impulse
What does the axon terminals do?
Hives the neurone connection to several other nerves/muscle cells
