The Nervous System Flashcards
What do the receptor cells do?
They convert various stimuli into electrical impulses
What does the skin detect
Pressure and temperature
What does the nose detect
Chemical - smell
What do the eyes detect
Light waves
What does the tongue detect
Chemicals in food
What do the ears detect
Sound and position of head
What is the difference between the functions of the sensory and motor neurones?
Sensory neurons carry signals from the outer parts of your body into the main nervous system. Motor neurones carry signals from the central nervous system to the outer parts of your body
What is homeostasis
Maintaining an optimum internal environment in the body
What two systems are involved in the coordination and control of the internal environment
1) the nervous system
2) hormonal / chemical messaging system
What are the four features of a good control system
Stimulus
Receptors
Coordination centre
Effectors
