Antibiotics Flashcards
What are painkillers
They are drugs that relieve pain. They don’t tackle the bacteria
What are antibiotics
They kill or prevent the growth of the bacteria causing damage or illness. Different antibiotics kill different bacteria
What don’t antibiotics kill and why
Viruses because viruses use the bodies cells. This makes it difficult to develop drugs that don’t kill the cells as well as the virus
Can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
Yes
Why can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics
They can mutate (change). This causes them to be resistant
If resistant strains survive and reproduce what are the consequences
They will cause very serious illness and infections if not properly treated.
Where did many drugs originally come from?
Plants
Where was aspirin developed from?
A chemical found in willow
Where was digitalis developed from?
A chemical found in foxgloves
