Diabetes Flashcards
What is insulin
a hormone produced in the pancreas which regulates the amount of glucose in the blood.
What is glucagon
a hormone formed in the pancreas which promotes the breakdown of glycogen to glucose in the liver.
What is type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.
What is type 2 diabetes
where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or the body’s cells don’t react to insulin
Treatment for type 1 diabetes
Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes: Taking insulin. Carbohydrate, fat and protein counting. Frequent blood sugar monitoring.
Treatment for type 2 diabetes
metformin is the first medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes. It works by improving the sensitivity of your body tissues to insulin so that your body uses insulin more effectively.
