The Nervous System ๐๐ผ Flashcards
Central nervous system is made up of:
The brain and the spinal cord
Electrical impulsesโฆ..
Travel quickly through neurones resulting in fast responses
Synapse:
Junction between two neurones.
Chemicals called neurotransmitters diffuse across a synapse. This slows down the message but to avoid too much slow down the nervous system is made up of neurones that are very long and have very few synapses
Events that happen when a message passes through a synapse
- An impulse arrives in the first neurone
- A package of neurotransmitter moves towards the neurone membrane
- The neurotransmitter is released and diffuses across the synapse gap.
- The transmitter binds to the membrane of the second neurone
- An electrical impulse travels down the second neurone
Do the order of the nervous response
Stimulus - receptors - sensory neurone - CNS - motor neurone - effector - response
What is the reflex arc-
A very fast response that often is used to PROTECT the body
eg/ moving away from a hot object
What does the message from the receptor pass through in a reflex arc
The relay neurone, in the spinal cord
Why is the reflex arc response so fast
Because the BRAIN IS NOT INVOLVED
What happens with the reflex arcโฆ
1) receptors in the skin detect heat stimulus
2) an electrical impulse travels down a sensory neurone to the spinal cord
3) the signal reaches the synapse
4) a neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapse
5) an electrical impulse travels along a relay neurone
6) a neurotransmitter diffuses across a second synapse
7) an electrical impulse travels down a motor neurone to a muscle
8) the muscle contracts and the arm is moved away from the flame
