BIG TEST 1 Flashcards
What are the characteristics of life/ how do we know if something is alive?
Movement Respiration Senses Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition
Label a plant and give functions
Roots- absorb water and minerals. Anchor the plant (keep it from falling over)
Leaf-makes food by photosynthesis
Stem-connects the plant structures to each other. Holds the plant up
Flower- reproduction
Which parts of the plant are needed for growth?
Leaf- makes the food
Stem- sends the food to different parts of the plant
Roots- absorb water which is needed for photosynthesis
What is biomass?
Biomass is the dry weight of a living thing
As a plant grows it increases in biomass
What does a plant need to make food?
REACTANTS: sunlight, carbon dioxide, water
PRODUCT: glucose, oxygen
Name two conditions that will encourage and limit growth
Encourage: water, light
Limit: too much/ not enough water, no light/ dim light,
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water—–> glucose + oxygen
Label and write the functions of an animal cell
Nucleus-
Cell membrane-
Cytoplasm-
Label a plant cell and write the functions
Nucleus- Cell membrane- Cell wall- Chloroplasts- Vacuole-
How is the palisade cell adapted for photosynthesis?
It had many chloroplasts
Name 3 features a leaf has and explain why
Waxy layer- reduces water loss
Flat/broad- increases surface area so more light can reach the leaf
Green- contains chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll
Label the structure of a leaf
Waxy top layer, upper epidermis, palisade layer, vein, spongy layer, air spaces, lower epidermis, guard cells, stomata
Pick two features of a leaf and explain what their function is
Chlorophyll- to absorb light energy
Veins- to deliver water and remove glucose during photosynthesis
What is transpiration
Transpiration is the flow of water through a plant
How does water flow through a plant?
1) Water enters the roots by osmosis
2) water travels up the stem in xylem vessels
3) water vapour diffuses out from the stomata in the leaf and comes out as gas
