The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
A change in environment which you may react to
What are the 5 sense organs?
Eyes Ears Nose Tongue Skin
What are receptors?
Groups of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus
What do sense organs contain?
Receptors
What do receptors do?
They change stimulus energy into electrical impulses
What can a stimulus be?
Light Sound Touch Pressure Pain Chemical Change in position or temperature
What receptor does eyes contain?
Light
What receptor does ears contain?
Sound
What receptor does your nose contain?
Smell
What receptor does your tongue contain?
Taste
What are light receptors sensitive to?
Light
What are sound receptors sensitive to?
Sound
What are smell receptors sensitive to?
A chemical stimuli
What are taste receptors sensitive to?
Bitter Salt Sweet Sour Savoury A chemical stimuli
What is skin sensitive to?
Touch
Pressure
Pain
Temperature change
What is a sensory neurone?
The nerve cell that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sense organs to the central nervous stystem
What is a relay neurone?
The nerve cells that carry signals from sensory neurones to motor neurones
What is the motor neurone?
The nerve cells that carry signals from the central nervous system to the effector
What are effectors?
Muscles
Glands
How does a muscle respond?
Contracts
How does a gland respond?
Secretes hormones
What is the central nervous system?
Where all the information from the sense organs are sent
Where reflexes and actions are coordinated
What does the central nervous system consist of?
The brain
Spinal cord
What do neurones do?
Transmit the information as electrical impulses quickly to and from the CNS
What are neurones?
Nerve cells
What is sent to the effectors?
Instructions from the CNS
