What is stage 1 of the menstrual cycle?
Bleeding starts
Uterus lining breaks down
For about 4 days
What is stage 2 of the menstrual cycle?
The lining builds up again from day 4 to 14
Into a spongy layer full of blood vessels
Ready to receive a fertilised egg
What is stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?
An egg is released from the ovary at day 14
What is stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?
The wall is the maintained for about 14 days until day 28
If no fertilised egg has landed on the uterus wall by day 28 the lining breaks down again
The cycle begins again
What are the 3 main hormones involved in the menstrual cycle?
FSH
Oestrogen
LH
What is FSH?
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone
What is LH?
Luteinising Hormone
Where is FSH produced?
Pituitary galnd
What does FSH do?
Causes an egg to mature in one of the ovaries
What does FSH stimulate?
The ovaries to produce oestrogen
Where is oestrogen produced?
Ovaries
What does oestrogen cause?
The pituitary gland to produce LH
What does oestrogen inhibit?
Further release of FSH
