Competition and Environmental Change Flashcards
What do organisms compete for?
Resources to survive
What do plants need?
Light
Space
Water
Minerals/nutrients from the soil
What do animals need?
Space/territory
Good
Water
Mates
What do organisms compete with?
Other species and members of their own species for the same resources
What are environmental changes caused by?
Different factors
What could a change be?
Increase or decrease
What 2 factors can these changes be caused by?
Living
Non-living
What are the 4 living factors which cause environmental changes?
A change in the occurrence of infectious diseases
A change in the number of predators
A change in the number of prey or availability of food sources
A change in the number of types of competitors
What are 3 non-living factors of environmental change?
A change in average temperature
A change in average rainfall
A change in the level of air and water pollution
What do environmental changes affect?
Populations in different ways
What 3 ways can environmental changes affect animals and plants?
Population size increases
Population size decreases
Population distribution changes
What does it mean by population size increases?
If the number of prey increases
Then there’s more food available for predators
More predators survive and reproduce
So their numbers increase too
What does it mean by population size decreases?
The number of bees in the US is falling rapidly
What are the 3 reasons why population size decreases?
Some pesticides may be having a negative effect on bees
There’s less food available
There’s more diseases
What does it mean by population distribution changes?
A change in where an organism lives
Eg. A rise in temperature
