The Nervous System Flashcards
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Nervous system divided into two parts: CNS and PNS
CNS, Brain/spinal cord
PNS, nerves and ganglia
31 spinal nerves
12 cranial nerves
Two systems: somatic nervous system (skeletal muscles and automatic nervous system (smooth muscles and glands)
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Nervous system three basic functions?
Sensory, gather info about change within and around the body
Integrative, info is brought together to be interpreted and creates sensation, memory, thought, decision
Motar, response to signals sent from CNS to effectors
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Neurons are nerve cells, found in?
- unique structure, cell body with many extensions that conduct impulses
Dendrites? Axon?
The nervous system
Shorter and more numerous, for the receptive surface of neurons
Long single fibre that conducts impulses away from the cell body
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
neuroglial cells?
Five types?
Supportive tissue of nervous system
Microglial-scattered throughout and digest debris and bacteria
Oligodendrocytes-provide insulation around axon in CNS
Astrocytes-connect blood vessels to neurons
Ependymal-form membrane covers cavity in brain
Schwann- form insulating shear around nerves within PNS
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Myelin? Nodes of ranvier?
Myelin sheath necessary for insulation of neurons
Myelinated-white matter
Unmyelinated- grey matter
Made up of Schwann and oligodendrocyte neuroglial cells
