Q

THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Spinal cord? Function?
Cervical enlargement?
Lumbar enlargement?

A

31 segments each with pair nerves spinal cord conducts nerve impulses and spinal reflexes

Supplies nerves to upper limbs

Supplies nerves to lower limbs

Q

THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
spinal reflexes?
Sensory nerves?
motar nerves?

A

Reflex arc passes through the spinal cord

Sensory nerves enter through dorsal root ganglia, carry message to brain

Motor nerves exit through ventral root ganglia, carry message from brain

Q

THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Brain three major parts?
Cerebral hemisphere?
Corpus callosum?

A

Cerebrum- largest, sensory/motar functions and higher mental function (memory, reasoning)

Cerebellum- coordinate voluntary muscles (balance/ coordination)

Brain stem- regulate visceral functions (automatic systems)

Left/right brain separated by it

Connects the two hemispheres of the brain

Q

THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM lobes of the brain? 4?
Cerebral cortex?
Ventricles?

A

Frontal- reasoning, thinking, language, motar areas, control voluntary muscles

Parietal- touch, temperature, pain, relation of body parts, emotions

Temporal-hearing/vision, memory, interpreting, sensory information

Occipital- vision, interprets visual information

Thin layer grey matter, outermost portion of cerebrum

Fluid filled cavities contain CFS

Q

THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

parts of the brain stem?

A

Thalamus-relay station

Hypothalamus- hormones, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hunger

Optic tract- optic nerves, cross over each other

Midbrain- visual reflexes, eye movement

Pons- relay sensory information

Medulla- heart, respiration, blood pressure

Pituitary gland- controls hormones

Hippocampus- memory controlled

Limbic system- how all systems work together to control emotion

Q
THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
meninges?
Dura matter?
Arachnoid matter?
Pia matter?
Cerebrospinal fluid?
A

Membranes located between bone and soft tissue

Outermost layer, blood vessels and nerves

Middle layer, no blood vessels

Inner most layer, many nerves and blood vessels to nourish cells of brain and spinal cord

Fluid between arachnoid and pia matter
