The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the organs of the nervous system?
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM:
Brain and spinal cord.
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM:
Nerves that connect the CNS and the rest of the body. (Aka all nerves)
What are the nervous systems jobs?
Communications and control.
Sending info nerve to nerve around the body.
Sense changes inside and outside and responds quickly.
What’s with the brain?
The brain has three parts,
CEREBRUM- controls all voluntary movements, senses, thoughts. Consists of four lobes.
CEREBELLUM- coordinates movements, makes them smooth, and Balance.
MEDULLA- brain stem.
Connects to spinal cord and controls involuntary activities. VITAL FUNCTIONS! Heartbeats, sleeping, breathing, and blood pressure.
What are the cerebrums parts?
- Frontal: controls voluntary movement, speech, intelligence, and personality.
- Parietal: controls sensory info and Kinesthetic sense.
- Occipital: controls vision.
- Temporal: controls smell, hearing, memory, thought, and judgement.
-The cerebrum has 2 hemispheres:
Right- controls art, music, intuition, and patterns.
Left-math, logic, language, and analysis.
What are the spinal cords function?
Connects brain to the rest of your body.
What are nerves impulses?
A combination of electrical chemical signals that are transmitted between nerve cells.
What are reflexes?
- the WITHDRAWAL reflex is an involuntary response to and outside stimulus.
- sensory nerves receive stimuli.
- motor nerves transmit signals to muscles.
