Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the skeletal systems jobs?
- shape and support
- movement
- protein
- make blood cells
- stores minerals and fats.
What are the skeletal systems bones?
it contains 206 bones.
What is the axial system?
The support of your body; skull, ribs, vertebrate.
What is the appendicular system?
Everything attached to the axial; aka limbs.
What are ligaments?
connects bone to bone.
What is cartilage?
Between bones and provide cushioning.
What bones give shape and support?
ribs
What are three bones that protect us?
- skull
- ribs
- vertebrate
What bones are involved in movement?
femur, humorous, phalanges
How does the tibia connect to the vertebrate?
tibia; femur; pelvis; vertebrate column.
What are the hands of feet and what are they made of?
There are 27 bones in each hand and 26 in each foot. All of these bones allow for MOVEMENT.
What types of bones are there?
Long bones: humorous
Short bones: tarsals (in foot bones and ankles)
Flat bones: ribs and sternum.
Irregular: vertebrate, ear.
What are the bone structuring?
BONES ARE ALIVE!
- They are living which allows for growth and repair.
- They are strong and lightweight so we are not too heavy.
- Along each bones there are nerves to communicate with other systems.
- Contain an outer membrane called the Periosteum.
- COMPACT bone with canals for nerves and blood vessels.
What types of bone structuring are there?
Spongy bones: makes bones lighter.
Marrow: RED at ends makes RED blood cells.
YELLOW at center stores FATS.
What are joints?
Bones come together at joints.
- they are held together by LIGAMENTS.
- protected by CARTILAGE.
- also protected by fluids.
